Who Qualifies for Weight Loss Medication? BMI and Eligibility Explained
Updated: Oct 15
One of the first questions patients ask is: do I qualify? Prescription weight loss medication is not for everyone, and the final decision always belongs to your physician. Here is how eligibility generally works.
The General BMI Guidelines
Prescription weight management medications such as tirzepatide and semaglutide are generally prescribed for adults who have:
A BMI of 30 or higher, or
A BMI of 27 or higher plus at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol
These medications are meant to be used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Who Should Not Take These Medications
GLP-1 medications are generally not prescribed for people who are pregnant or planning pregnancy, or who have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). A history of pancreatitis or certain other conditions may also affect whether they are a good fit. That is why an honest, complete medical evaluation matters.
